You see that nifty little icon next to the URL in your Internet browser’s address bar? That little icon is known as a favicon (short for favourites icon) and was originally used by Microsoft for their Internet Explorer favourites list. However, since then everyone has jumped on the bandwagon and the favicon has become a pretty standard feature for most websites.

The original and simplest way of attaching a favicon to your website is to simply locate or create a standard icon (.ico) file, rename it to favicon.ico and then drop it into the root folder of your web server.

However, if you don’t like that idea all that much, another method is available to you and you can simply insert either of the following tags (the two just highlight the difference between pointing to an .ico and a .png file) into the section of your HTML output:

Now the purpose of today’s little post is to highlight a particularly useful web site I stumbled across that allows you to generate your own favicon.ico files.

www.favicon.cc has been created by some clever bugger wanting to stretch their coding prowess muscles and turns out to be a pretty darn good application. The web site design is very simple, clean and uncluttered, and even a newbie should be able to whip up their own little icon in record time.

Clever controls allow you to either create your own icon from scratch (including the ability to generate animations!) or import existing images and automatically convert them into useable icons. Your masterpiece complete, you then have the option to either download or publish your icon for use all over the World Wide Web!

It really couldn’t be any simpler :)

    Hi apidong. There are actually a number of wordpress plugins that handle this for you. Just do yourself a favour and search in Google for: “wordpress plugin favicon” :)

    yup:) I'm agree with you, making favicon not so hard. But look at favicon on your website – what is that? maybe little noised triangle or ninja? The reason to ask professionals is to make your online identity memorable and understandable, for example: when someone looking in bookmarks he can find your website not only by words but by little image too.
    The other reason that your ninja (i hope its not noised triangle:) ) isn't presented on your website, why you didn't use blue robot or anime character instead? both of them are part of you identity so why use something different? it's not so memorable.
    Ok, the third reason is simple: why you've used white background on your favicon? The top browser nowdays is FF and it have gray background beyond the favicon. Your ninja in white background looks not as good as possible when it comes on gray bar. So right favicon will have transparent background and will look awesome and memorable in any browser addressbar, tabs, favorites menus, etc

    just put this code into header template on your blog somewhere between <head> and </head>
    tags:
    <link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”http://yourdomain.com/favicon.ico” type=”image/x-icon” />
    then put your webpage icon (you must name it “favicon.ico” and it must be icon format) in root folder of your domain. Voila, CTRL/CMD + F5!

    Oh, it's actually a little samurai in the process of drawing his sword. It's a legacy icon from an old theme I used to have applied to my site. Simply haven't bothered to find the time to update it yet.

    Just a note, FF is definitely not the top browser at the moment, so I'm going to ignore that part of your comment – all the stats will tell you that and besides, browser choice is a personal choice. FF is annoying in that it doesn't use image placeholders to indicate broken images – a nightmare if you are a web developer by the way.
