Now here’s a nifty little website that I stumbled across thanks to a tip from the ever watchful Merkaba: AlternativeTo, a site that aims to provide you the user with alternative software options based against your choice of software that you wish to replace.
Ripped directly from their home page:
Find better Windows, Mac, Linux and online applications
AlternativeTo is a new approach to finding good software. Tell us what application you want to replace and we give you suggestions on great alternatives! Instead of listing thousands of more or less crappy applications in a category, we make each application into a category. Think of it like forever evolving blog posts about good alternatives to the software that you’re not satisfied with. And the “blog posts” are generated by you through suggestions, comments and votes.
The site is still in beta, but I am thoroughly loving this little invaluable tool. Already it has led me on to quite a few alternatives I might never have otherwise stumbled across and I would certainly urge you to have a quick look if you are currently feeling a little frustrated with any particular package currently installed on your desktop…
